BAGUIO CITY – More barangay satellite markets may soon be established in the various barangays in the city in line with the city government’s thrust to decongest the central business district as well as to promote livelihood and employment in the barangay level.
The city council committee on market, trade, commerce and agriculture chaired by Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. proposed a resolution approving the construction of additional barangay satellite markets particularly in the 12 barangays that submitted intent.
Yangot said barangays Kias, Quezon Hill Proper, East Quirino Hill, Bakakeng Norte/Sur, Cabinet Hill-Teachers Camp, Cresencia Village, Fort Del Pilar, Lower Lourdes Subd., Outlook Drive, Pinsao Pilot Project, Lower Magsaysay and Atok Trail requested the city for the identification of parcels of land where the satellite markets will be put up.
Five other barangays – Bayan Park, Gibraltar/Pacdal, Camp 7, Engineers Hill and Lower Rock Quarry — have identified the lots but these need to be formally surveyed.
He asked city planning and development officer Evelyn Cayat and city engineer Victorino Olpindo to conduct an inspection of the areas.
Yangot said the putting up of additional barangay markets has been discussed with and approved in principle by Mayor Mauricio Domogan.
This is pursuant to Article II Section 10 of Ordinance No. 7 series of 2006 establishing Barangay Market Days in the city’s barangays.
“The establishment of these barangay satellite markets will definitely help declog the Baguio City Public Market and even streets in the central business district from itinerant vendors and even from market goers who incidentally are among the major contributors to the traffic congestion in the (CBD),” Yangot said.
“There is a need to formally approve and adopt the establishment of the abovementioned barangay satellite markets so that they will be included in the maintenance, management and operation by the City Government of Baguio.”
