Baguio Drops 2nd in Batang Pinoy Luzon Standing

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) administered Philippine Youth Games or Batang Pinoy Luzon Qualifying leg which kicked-off in Naga, Camarines Sur successfully closed last week with team Baguio landing in the 2nd highest spot.

As per latest medal tally count, Baguio City slided down to 2nd place in over-all standing with 38 golds, 35 silvers and 35 bronze medals falling short to Quezon City who bagged this year’s over-all crown with 50 golds, 41 silvers and 35 bronze medals.

Team Pangasinan inched its way to 3rd spot with 30 golds, 24 silver and 42 bronze medals while Muntinlupa City settled to 4th place with 27 golds, 13 silver and 23 bronze medals.

Team Laguna also entered the top five spot with 23 golds, 24 silvers and 26 bronze medals.

Contributors to the medal haul of Team Baguio are Team Arnis contributing the most medals with 11 golds, 6 silvers and 7 bronze while Archery amassed 9 golds, 10 silvers and 10 bronze medals.

The Baguio Taekwondo Team also pitched in a modest 9 golds, 6 silvers and 8 bronze medals and retained their over-all crown.

Adding another medal haul is Team Muay Thai with 6 golds, 2 silvers and 3 bronze medals.

Meantime, Team Wrestling managed to secure 1 gold, 6 silvers and 4 bronze medals despite struggling with lop-sided calls from technical officials.

Team Athletics also contributed 2 golds and 3 silvers and another gold  and bronze medal was secured by the Lawn Tennis Team.

The Futsal Team’s debut in the Batang Pinoy games was a big surprise after securing a silver and a ticket to the nationals.

A bronze medal was also secured in swimming.

The Philippine youth Games is one of the grassroots sport developmental program of the PSC which was revived in 2011.

It aims to showcase young athletes ages 10 to 15 bracket sponsored by their Local government Units (LGU’s) in order to find and recruit promising athletes for the national training pool.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists of the Batang Pinoy Luzon Qualifying Leg will be competing for the national finals in Bacolod City come December 9 to 13 this year./paul rillorta
