Baguio is the 6th safest city in Southeast Asia

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan on Wednesday hailed the City’s recognition as one of the safest cities in Southeast Asia saying it is the result of the incessant joint efforts of the government and the community.

“I’m glad that the collective efforts exerted by our police force, private partners and volunteers down to the barangay level in maintaining peace in our City are finally good results so much so that we are now being given recognition in that aspect,” the mayor said.

“It is really good news for our City and I thank all our partners for their contributions with the hope that we will be able to sustain if not surpass our achievements.”

Reports circulated last week that the City was included among the ten safest cities in Southeast Asia based on data released by Numbeo, which according to the WowCordillera website is “the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide.”

“It provides current and timely information on world living conditions including cost of living, housing indicators, health care, traffic, crime and pollution,” the site said.

Citing Numbeo data, the Philippine Star reported that Baguio City placed sixth in the list of cities with the lowest crime and highest safety rates posting 40.57 percent crime and 59.43 percent safety indexes.

It joined four other cities from the Philippines in the list: Valenzuela City, at second place with 25.21 percent and 74.79 percent crime and safety rates respectively; Davao City, fourth place with 28.79 percent and 71.21 percent crime and safety rates; Makati City, fifth place with 39.56 and 60.44 percent ratings and Cebu City, eighth place with 44.28 and 55.72 percent.

Singapore topped the list with 16.23 percent crime and 83.77 percent safety rates.

Completing the list were Chiang Mai in Thailand, third place with 28.72 percent crime and 71.29 percent safety rates; Bali in Indonesia, seventh with 42.46 and 57.54 percent; Penang in Malaysia, ninth place with 45 and 55 percent and Bangkok in Thailand, tenth with 47.06 and 52.94 percent ratings./Aileen P.
