Baguio to join the lighting of ASEAN landmark

BAGUIO CITY – The summer capital of the Philippines will join the historic lighting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) landmark on August 8.

The landmark lighting is a significant event to observe the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and to help contribute to raising the level of awareness of the citizenry on the importance and benefits of the ASEAN community.

City tourism operations officer Jose Marie Rivera said that the city government of Baguio will have a simple yet meaning program at the Baguio City Hall grounds, 7:00 P.M. on the said date.

The program will begin with a performance by the Baguio City National High School Special Program in the Arts.

Subsequently, the symbolic lighting ceremony of the ASEAN lantern will be led by mayor Mauricio Domogan together with the city officials of Baguio.

The singing of the ASEAN Spirit theme song will again be led by the Baguio City National High School-SPA.

Delivering the keynote address will be mayor Domogan.

ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Brunei Darussalam then joined on January 7, 1984, Vietnam on July 28, 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on July 23, 1997, and Cambodia on April 30, 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN./Jho Arranz
