July 4, 2015
BAGUIO CITY – An amount of P 1 million was donated recently by Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) to Baguio Water District (BWD) for its fencing project of Busol Watershed to help prevent further encroachment by illegal settlers and other destruction to a major water source.
BENECO general manager Gerardo Verzosa said this part of their corporate social responsibility – a worthy cause for the protection and preservation of the forest, the source of water.
BWD in coordination with the Baguio Baguio Regreening Movement (BRM) will construct a perimeter fence to protect Busol Watershed.
Atty. Erdolfo Batavia, chairman of BRM, said that a total amount of P32.8 million is needed to fence the watershed with a length of 25,369 meters. The fence will be made of concrete hollow blocks reinforced by concrete posts.
The Busol watershed supplies 15% of the water needs of Baguio. It has six deep wells directly supplying 6,179 households in Aurora Hill.
It also has 10 deep wells and two springs within the watershed that serve as recharging area for 7,728 households from other areas of Aurora Hill and Pacdal.
Engr. Salvador Royeca, BWD general manager, is thankful for the donation and requested that institutions like BENECO as well as individuals to support the preservation of all the watersheds in the city./JDP/JBZ- PIA CAR
