BAGUIO CITY – Acting to combat the increasing incidence of tree deterioration and death in the city, the city environment and parks management office (CEPMO) sought venues for information dissemination and knowledge-sharing from experts.
An initial activity will be a tree disease management seminar on Dec. 15-16 at the Dominican Heritage Area.
CEPMO head Cordelia Lacsamana said the seminar aims to provide information and knowledge on the city’s continuing effort to protect the trees particularly the Benguet pine.
This is in the light of findings on the increased morbidity of pine trees in the city which reportedly was caused by tree pests like ips and dendroctunos as identified during the forum conducted by experts from the Benguet State University and Environment Research Development Bureau.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan approved the project proposal for the training in the hope of arresting the pests and saving the trees.
CEPMO forestry division head Beatriz Gajete said the seminar will be participated in by CEPMO personnel and representatives from the barangays, schools, stakeholders and the media.
Experts from various concerned agencies will facilitate the lectures on the following topics: “Identification of Bark Beetles Associated with Pine Trees and Bark Beetle Biology Suggested Management,” “Proper Care and Maintenance of Pine Trees.” “Factors Contributing to Pine Tree Infestation” and Associated Fungi Symptoms; Nematodes and Suggested Management.”
At the end of the seminar, the participants are expected to have increased knowledge on the prevailing situation and apply them to reduce or subdue morbidity and mortality of trees through application of techniques and updates including employment of methods and technology learned and disseminate the same information to other stakeholders and encourage local action./A Refuerzo
