BAGUIO CITY – Councillor Elaine D. Sembrano proposed a resolution declaring the month of March of every year as camping month to attract tourists and develop ecological awareness. In the proposal, the city, aside from declaring a camping month, shall also create a program which will focus on attracting tourists who are into outdoor adventures and discovering nature through camping.
Sembrano explained that because of the city’s topography and climate, it is a conducive camping destination for visitors looking for new adventure aside from the usual activity of tourists of eating at restaurants, hunting through second hand goods, and going to malls.
“The City of Baguio is host to several camping sites but are not fully utilized because there are no programs being implemented by the city for the purpose,” the lady councillor said.
Sembrano added that camping and nature tourism has the potential to give rise to the city’s being a traveller’s destination and also to help increase the revenue of businesses as well as the areas to be determined in the future as allowable camping sites.
The proposal, once approved, will task the City Administrator’s Office to prepare for the plans for the purpose. An ordinance institutionalizing the program would also be introduced in the future should the plan to make the city a campers’ destination prosper./Leah C. Ong
