BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Vice-Mayor Edison Bilog led local officials in launching the city’s 2017 Family Month celebration in Monday’s flag-raising rites at City Hall with the theme, “Pamilya ang Pundasyon ng Sambayanang Pilipino”.
Councilor Lilia Farinas, chair of the city council’s committee on social services, women and urban poor, said the event is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 60 issued on September 28, 1992, that aims to increase awareness on various family issues and enhance effectiveness of national and local efforts in carrying out specific programs, generating new activities and strengthening new ones.
The measure also promotes collaboration among national and local non-government organizations in support of multi-sectoral activities.
She added that the family is indeed the foundation of the Filipino nation and should be celebrated for its spirit and substance.
For his part, Domogan said the celebration reminds us that the Family is the basic unit of our society and emphasizes the important role parents play as the primary teachers in molding their children’s character.
He stressed the importance of walking the talk in promoting good values since young people usually follow what their parents do and not what they say.
“This is why, as parents, we should lead by example and not engage in vices like smoking, drinking and gambling that will serve as bad influence to our children,” the Mayor said.
Among the activities included in the month-long celebration is the Mass Wedding on September 22 at Baguio Convention Center spearheaded by the City Social Welfare and Development Office under Betty Fangasan. /Gaby Keith
