KIANGAN, Ifugao, Jan. 5 (PIA)- – The Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) and its attached agency, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA), recently conducted an information and education campaign (IEC) and Forum on Early Warning System (EWS) and the El Nino Phenomenon in the province.
The IEC and Forum on the EWS last December 3 aims to enhance the capacity and ability of disaster managers on disaster prevention and mitigation through the utilization of science-based tools for early warning.
Personnel of the DOST-CAR lectured and presented the DOST EWS Projects, Visualization Tools/Websites for the Hydromet Sensors, Project Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH), the Climatex Predict Website and the Introduction to Rain-Induced Landslide.
Last December 14, PAGASA staff headed by Engr. Fredolina Baldonado also conducted a Forum on the El Nino Phenomenon primarily to make the participants understand the El Nino and its consequences and recognize the need for mitigation strategies or interventions.
The event participated by representatives from the provincial and line agencies was also aimed at communicating climate information and useful forecast to diverse users and decision makers in order to build the capacity of professionals to use climate information in decision-making related to agriculture, water resource management, public health and disaster management.
PAGASA personnel discussed the topics on Weather Update, Hydro-meteorological Hazards, Climate of the Place and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Climate Review, El Nino Update and Outlook, PAGASA Products and Services for Agriculture and Water Resource Sector while staff from the Ifugao provincial government also talked about its mitigation strategies for El Nino./DBC- PIA CAR, Ifugao
