Kennon Road remains closed this weekend

BAGUIO CITY – The Kennon Road will remain closed to traffic this weekend for the safety of motorists as per advisory of the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CRDRRMC).

The scheduled opening of Kennon Road for light vehicles this weekend (6:00PM of April 5 to 6:00AM of April 8) was cancelled by CRDRRMDC chairperson, Office of Civil Defense Regional Director Albert Mogol upon the recommendation of Tuba Municipal Police due to falling rocks caused by rainfalls in the past few days.

Motorists are also advised to take safety measures when traversing other routes coming in and out of Baguio City namely Marcos Highway, Naguilian Road and the Asin-Nangalisan-San Pascual-Tubao Road.

Department of Public Works and Highways Regional Director Tiburcio Canlas said their office with CRDRRMC and Task Force Kennon Road are conducting continuous monitoring of Kennon Road and other roads leading to Baguio City and Benguet to ensure safety of the road and the other structures especially after the heavy rains in the past days.

Kennon Road has been opened for light vehicles on a two-way scheme on weekends since March 15 to divert traffic coming in and out of Baguio City. Such scheme, however, is subject to change depending on the situation of the road such as presence of falling rocks.

Canlas reiterated Kennon Road cannot be fully opened yet since road construction including rock neting or slope protection and other improvements are still being done. These are measure needed to be done to ensure the integrity and safety of the road line.

He called on residents along the area to bear with the temporary road scheme since construction being done in Kennon road would benefit them in the long run./(JDP/RMC-PIA CAR)
