Mayor calls for better coordination of projects on national roads

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan reiterated his call for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office to immediately coordinate with concerned local government agencies before implementing projects on national roads located in the city.

“Despite the fact that these projects are on national roads, when these are not finished on time or are substandard, it is the local officials who are blamed by the public,” he lamented.

In a meeting Thursday at city hall with representatives from the DPWH-CAR, DPWH-Baguio City District Engineering Office (BCDEO), City Administrator Carlos Canilao, City Environment and Parks Management Office head Cordelia Lacsamana and several private contractors, the Mayor was briefed on several unfinished sewer lines and clogged manholes located at various areas in the city.

Echoing the Mayor’s call for better coordination, Canilao suggested that the DPWH-CAR immediately coordinate with concerned local government agencies before the start every project on national roads.

“Immediate coordination before each project will save time in terms of man hours and even additional costs on delayed or substandard projects will be prevented,” he stressed.

Canilao added that the mindset should be on solving the problem “before it even occurs” and not merely on “damage control” when damage has already been done.

The Mayor pointed out the importance of coordination between national, regional and local offices in the implementation of projects on national roads since this will redound to the benefit of the public.

“Projects that are delayed and substandard must not be tolerated since these may inconvenience and cause harm to the public,” Domogan said./Gaby Keith/PIO
