No concern for Filipinos’ difficult lives
VOL. XVII NO. 24 March 29 – April 4, 2014
LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… God spoke all these words… You shall not steal…” (Exodus 20:1, 15, the Holy Bible).

NO CONCERN FOR FILIPINOS’ DIFFICULT LIVES: Here’s a repost from 26 September 2013: “I was at the Aparri (Cagayan Province) Public Market one early morning, at the shop of a client involved in a land case in the town, when I chanced upon men and women who were already furiously engaged in the buying and selling of merchandize, valiantly trying to earn for the day.
“And it occurred to me that, without doubt, these are the true and real `honorable Filipinos’ despite their apparent lack of formal education or any lofty position. I caught myself asking, did our lawmakers who diverted their billion-peso pork barrel allocations to line up their pockets, fatten their bank accounts, and ensure a good and comfortable life for themselves and their families, have any occasion at all to see for themselves these `little’ countrymen of theirs?
“I guess our lawmakers haven’t had any chance (or, maybe, interest) at all to witness this grave and difficult lives of the poor and marginalized constituents of theirs… Maybe, just maybe, if only our legislators who love prefixing their names with the title `honorable’ had even just a little sense of real honor in their bones, they would have made an effort to know how their voters actually live their daily lives, and therefore temper their greed and tone it down a little bit…

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER CAN COME ONLY FROM PEOPLE: “But, please make no mistake about it. I am not advocating anything here. Rather, I would go on record in saying that what we, as abused citizens, can do is to offer more prayers for our lawmakers and other government officials, so that God will touch their hearts and teach them how to live according to the `honorable’ title that they have conferred upon themselves.
“Prayers of righteous men and women are, after all, both powerful and effective. In fact, I will go one step further than this: I am advocating that those who can no longer stomach the greed and corruption that our officials almost without exception have become addicted to quite greatly is for us, ourselves, to start the change that will matter in this country.
“And this could be done by changing the attitudes of our mind. We must conform no longer to the patterns of this world, and start changing the way we think about things, the way we talk, and the way we act.

SALVATION FROM THE WORD OF GOD: “How can we stop conforming to the evil patterns of this world and change the way we think, act and talk? By filling our minds with whatever is true, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is commendable, whatever is excellent and praiseworthy. Surely, a mind that is filled with the truth, purity, loveliness, respect, justice and excellence will never even think of greed and corruption.
“Here is an example of what is true, pure, lovely, respectful, just, commendable, excellent and praiseworthy: `Be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God so that you maybe able to stand against the schemes of the devil….
“For this reason, take up the full armor of God… Stand firm therefore by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace, and, in all of this, by taking up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God…”
