BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan expressed confidence the Cordillera Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) will finalize the opening dates for Kennon Road to light vehicles to lessen the monstrous traffic congestion along major roads leading to the city during the celebration of major activities in the city in the coming months.

The city chief executive claimed that contractors of the public works department should comply with their commitments to complete their awarded projects pursuant to the marching orders of public works authorities so that inconveniences to the motoring public once the road will be opened to light vehicles will be lessened and smooth travel of visitors to and from the city is ensured by preventing possible congestions along major roads leading to the city during the conduct of special events
The DPWH closed Kennon road last July 2018 after a series of landslides that caused the untimely death of some innocent individuals and inflicting injuries to dozens of others, to pave the way for the rehabilitation of the 9 identified critical sections along the roadline.
Domogan disclosed it was agreed by members of the CDRRMC that the announcement of the opening of Kennon road to light vehicles will be done by the regional director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
“We already signed a memorandum of agreement that detailed the duties and responsibilities of concerned government agencies, the involved local governments, among other stakeholders, to ensure that the temporary opening of Kennon Road for the residents of the barangays located along the stretch of the road will be strictly observed to prevent further complications of the issue in the coming weeks,” Domogan stressed.
He appealed for understanding from the various sectors in Baguio and Benguet that the temporary closure of Kennon road to light vehicles is to allow the speedy implementation of the major rehabilitation projects along the different critical sections of the road so that once that it will be opened to light vehicles, the whole stretch of the road will be safe for both residents and visitors alike.
He asserted that it is a must that Kennon road will be opened to light vehicles several days before the special events in the city to provide motorists with an alternate route and decongest Marcos highway and the newly opened Tubao-Nangalisan-Baguio road and prevent the monstrous traffic jams that had been experienced in the past./Dexter A.
