OWWA to Treat OFWs, Families on June 7

BAGUIO CITY – Overseas Filipino Workers, Balik Mangagawa and their families are in for a day of fun and surprises this Sunday, June 7, as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration -Cordillera Regional office is set to spearhead a Migrant Workers’ Day celebration.

OWWA Cordillera OIC Regional Director Evelyn Laranang, in an interview over PIA Hour, invites OFWs and OFW returnees in the Baguio – Benguet area for the celebration set at the St. Vincent Parish Multi-purpose Gymnasium along Naguilian Road, here.

This is an annual OWWA event pursuant to Republic Act 8042 or the Migrant Workers Act of 1995, which instituted policies on overseas employment and established a higher standard of protection and promotion of the welfare of migrant workers, their families and other OWS in distress.

This year’s celebration theme is “Kasanayan at Husay sa Paggawa, Proteksyon ng Migranteng Mangagawa (Work skills and talents, protection of migrant workers), to highlight the importance of globally competitive Filipino workforce in overseas employment.

Lined-up activities include skills demo, OFW livelihood product display and selling, free medical services and film showing on migration realities and anti-human trafficking campaign.

There will also be songs and dances, fun games, line-dancing for the participants and other surprises.

“These activities aim to promote skills development as well as healthy lifestyle to OFWs and their families, as well as provide advocacy campaign on common migration problems including human trafficking”, Laranang said.

OWWA expects around 500 participants to join in this celebration which will start at 10:00AM with Baguio City and Benguet officials as invited guest speakers./JDP/CCD – PIA CAR
