BAGUIO CITY – The City Council approved a resolution urgently reminding the City Solid Waste Management Bioard (CSWMB) through the General Services Office and the City Solid Waste Division and the garbage hauler to ensure that waste materials are treated with anti-odor agents before the same are transported or hauled out of the city.
Further, the resolution also requested the General Services Office to use anti-odor agents and dis-infectants on the city’s garbage trucks hauling garbage from the different barangays to the haule3r’s transfer station in Lamtang, Puguis, La Trinidad, Benguet to lessen the foul odor emanating from the generated waste in the city’s barangays.
The resolution authored by Councilor Elaine D. Sembrano stated it is imperative that the city’s garbage hauler or contractor and those in charge of the hauling of the generated waste from the city’s barangays need to be mindful that the spread of disease-causing micro-organisms can be through the air aside from physical contact and for health and safety reasons, it is necessary to ensure that garbage in transit is treated with anti-odor agents to avoid being a nuisance en route to their designated destinations.
The local government is current hauling its garbage to a sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac while its garbage trucks haul the city’s generated waste from the barangays to the transfer station of the hauler in Lamtang, Puguis, La Trinidad town.
However, residents in the barangays and along the transfer route of the garbage trucks from the designated pick up stations and the transfer station have repeatedly complained of alleged irrigation of the obnoxious odor that lingers even when the trucks carrying the said garbage are gone.
The resolution stipulated that the city is being put in a bad state once the trucks of its hauler and its garbage trucks pass by populated areas and emit foul odor from the garbage loaded on the said trucks.
Representatives of MA Camilo Trucking and Freight Services informed local legislators that before the city’s residual waste are loaded and transported, the garbage is being treated with lime and other anti-odor chemicals and dis-infectants.
The resolution also reminded the garbage hauler to make sure that the trucks used for hauling the city’s residual waste is properly covered and that the garbage is treated with anti-odor agents to prevent repeated complaints from residents along the route regarding foul odor from the garbage.
Moreover, the garbage hauler was also tasked to make sure that there will be no liquid from the trucks that will be dripping while en route to the sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac considering that the lechet from the residual waste are the ones emitting foul odor.
The city is hauling out some 160 to 170 tons of residual waste from the hauler’s transfer station to the sanitary landfill.
The city’s garbage trucks is collecting some 402 tons of garbage from the city’s 128 barangays daily with most of the bioldegradable waste converted to compost fertilizer by the Environmental Recycling system (ERS) machines while the recyclable waste is taken by the volunteers. /By Dexter A. See
