BAGUIO CITY – Hundreds of physical fitness enthusiasts and Baguio residents joined the zumba for the protection of ozone layer last week at the Burnham Park.
This is part of the whole world’s drive to protect the ozone layer for the future generations.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) lead the city in observing the Ozone Protection Month celebration this September.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Caring for All Life Under the Sun.”
This coincides with the observance of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer intended to spread awareness of the depletion of the ozone and search for solutions to preserve it.
Accordingly, a global climate deal reached in Rwanda last year, the Kigali Agreement is an amendment to the 1987 Montreal Protocol which aims to phaseout hydrofluorocarbons or HFCs, a family of potent greenhouse gases by the late 2040s.
“The United Nations Environment Programme recently launched the website for its newest campaign www.ozoneheroes.org, as well as #OzoneHeroes that will be used in social media to raise awareness on the accomplishments of the Montreal Protocol.”
The ozone layer is the earth’s “sunscreen” protecting living things from too much ultraviolet radiation. The emission of ozone depleting substances has been damaging the ozone layer. /Jho Arranz
